Tener que and Hay que
Express a personal obligation with tener que and a general need with hay que.
Tener que and Hay que
Use tener que + infinitive when a particular person has to do something. Use hay que + infinitive for a general need or rule without naming a person.
A personal obligation
Conjugate tener, add que, and keep the next verb in the infinitive.
Tengo que trabajar mañana.
I have to work tomorrow.
Marta tiene que estudiar.
Marta has to study.
Tenemos que comprar pan.
We have to buy bread.
A general need
Hay que practicar todos los días.
You have to practise every day.
En clase hay que escuchar.
In class, you have to listen.
Watch out
Do not conjugate the second verb: Tengo que estudiar, not Tengo que estudio. This is one common verb + infinitive pattern.
