Hace, Desde, and Desde Hace
Learn how to use hace, desde, and desde hace in Spanish to say when something started or how long it has continued.
Hace, Desde, and Desde Hace
Spanish uses hace, desde, and desde hace to talk about time, but they answer different questions.
- hace + time → how long ago something happened
- desde + starting point → since when something has been happening
- desde hace + period of time → how long something has been happening
Compare:
- Llegué aquí hace dos años. — I arrived here two years ago.
- Vivo aquí desde 2024. — I have lived here since 2024.
- Vivo aquí desde hace dos años. — I have lived here for two years.
Hace + time
Use hace + period of time to say how long ago something happened.
Structure:
hace + amount of time
- Llegué a España hace dos años. — I arrived in Spain two years ago.
- La vi hace una semana. — I saw her a week ago.
- Empecé a estudiar español hace seis meses. — I started studying Spanish six months ago.
- Salimos hace diez minutos. — We left ten minutes ago.
This structure usually refers to a completed point in the past.
You can also place hace + time at the beginning:
- Hace tres días fui al médico. — Three days ago, I went to the doctor.
Desde + starting point
Use desde with a specific starting point.
It answers:
Since when?
Common starting points include:
- a year
- a date
- a day
- a time
- a specific event
Examples:
- Vivo aquí desde 2024. — I have lived here since 2024.
- Trabajo desde las ocho. — I have been working since eight.
- No la veo desde el lunes. — I have not seen her since Monday.
- Estudio español desde enero. — I have been studying Spanish since January.
The structure is:
desde + starting point
Desde hace + period of time
Use desde hace + period of time to say how long an action has continued until now.
It answers:
For how long?
- Vivo aquí desde hace dos años. — I have lived here for two years.
- Estudio español desde hace seis meses. — I have been studying Spanish for six months.
- Trabajo en esta empresa desde hace un año. — I have worked at this company for a year.
- Estamos esperando desde hace media hora. — We have been waiting for half an hour.
The structure is:
present tense + desde hace + period of time
Spanish often uses the present tense here, even when English uses have been + -ing or have + past participle.
Compare:
- Spanish: Vivo aquí desde hace tres años.
- English: I have lived here for three years.
Not:
- ❌ He vivido aquí desde hace tres años when you simply mean that you still live here now.
- ✅ Vivo aquí desde hace tres años.
Hace vs. desde hace
This difference is especially important.
Hace + time
Shows how long ago something started or happened:
- Empecé a trabajar aquí hace dos años. — I started working here two years ago.
Desde hace + time
Shows that something started in the past and continues now:
- Trabajo aquí desde hace dos años. — I have worked here for two years.
Compare:
- Empecé a aprender español hace un año. — I started learning Spanish a year ago.
- Aprendo español desde hace un año. — I have been learning Spanish for a year.
Desde vs. desde hace
Use desde with a starting point:
- desde 2025
- desde enero
- desde el lunes
- desde las nueve
Use desde hace with a duration:
- desde hace un año
- desde hace tres meses
- desde hace una semana
- desde hace dos horas
Compare:
- Vivo aquí desde 2025.
- Vivo aquí desde hace un año.
Both can describe the same situation, but one gives the starting point and the other gives the duration.
Hace + time + que
Spanish also commonly uses:
hace + time + que + present tense
This has a similar meaning to desde hace.
- Hace dos años que vivo aquí. — I have lived here for two years.
- Hace seis meses que estudio español. — I have been studying Spanish for six months.
Compare:
- Vivo aquí desde hace dos años.
- Hace dos años que vivo aquí.
Both are natural.
At A2 level, it is useful to recognize both structures.
Common mistakes
Do not use desde with a duration alone
- ❌ Vivo aquí desde dos años.
- ✅ Vivo aquí desde hace dos años.
Use desde for a starting point, not simply a length of time.
Do not translate English “for” directly
English uses for with duration:
I have lived here for three years.
Spanish usually uses:
- ✅ Vivo aquí desde hace tres años.
Not:
- ❌ Vivo aquí por tres años. for an action that started in the past and still continues now.
Use the present tense for continuing situations
- ✅ Trabajo aquí desde 2025.
- ✅ Trabajo aquí desde hace un año.
Spanish often uses the present tense because the situation is still true now.
Quick rule
hace + time → ago
- Llegué hace dos años. — I arrived two years ago.
desde + starting point → since
- Vivo aquí desde 2024. — I have lived here since 2024.
desde hace + duration → for
- Vivo aquí desde hace dos años. — I have lived here for two years.
