Basic Negation

To make a simple Spanish sentence negative, put no before the conjugated verb.

Main pattern

no + conjugated verb

No trabajo los domingos.

I do not work on Sundays.

No tengo coche.

I do not have a car.

No puedo ir hoy.

I cannot go today.

Marta no vive aquí.

Marta does not live here.

With a small pronoun such as me, put no before the pronoun: No me gusta correr. No me levanto temprano.

You can also use no in a short answer: ¿Quieres café? — No, gracias.

Watch out

Spanish does not add an equivalent of English do not or does not. Use no with the normal verb form: No trabaja aquí.

See subject pronouns, the present tense, and common patterns with gustar or poder.
