Muy, Mucho, and Basic Quantity

Use muy to mean very. Use mucho to mean a lot or much / many.

Muy

Use muy before an adjective or adverb.

  • Esta camisa es muy bonita. — This shirt is very pretty.
  • Habla muy rápido. — He / she speaks very fast.

Muy does not change form.

Mucho

Verb + mucho

Use mucho after a verb to mean a lot.

  • Trabajo mucho. — I work a lot.
  • Me gusta mucho. — I like it a lot.

Here, mucho does not change.

Mucho + noun

Before a noun, mucho means much / many / a lot of and agrees with the noun:

  • Tengo mucho dinero. — I have a lot of money.
  • Hay mucha gente. — There are a lot of people.
  • Tengo muchos libros. — I have many books.
  • Hay muchas tiendas. — There are many shops.

Other basic quantity words

Some other common words work in a similar way before nouns:

  • poco / poca / pocos / pocas — little / few
  • algún / alguna / algunos / algunas — some / a few

They agree with the noun:

  • Hay pocas camisetas azules. — There are few blue T-shirts.
  • Necesito algunos euros. — I need a few euros.
  • Compramos algunas cosas. — We buy a few things.

To say a little of something, use the fixed structure:

un poco de + noun

  • Hablo un poco de español. — I speak a little Spanish.
  • Quiero un poco de agua. — I want a little water.

Watch out

Do not use mucho before an adjective.

  • ✅ Es muy bonito. — It is very pretty.
  • ❌ Es mucho bonito.

Compare:

  • Trabajo mucho. — I work a lot.
  • Tengo mucho trabajo. — I have a lot of work.
  • Estoy muy cansado. — I am very tired.

Quick rule

  • muy + adjective/adverb → muy bonito, muy rápido
  • verb + mucho → trabajo mucho
  • mucho/a/os/as + noun → mucha agua, muchos libros
  • un poco de + noun → un poco de café

These expressions are common with gustar, hay, and noun agreement.
