Noun Plurals
Make common Spanish nouns plural and match their articles and adjectives.
Noun Plurals in Spanish
Use a plural noun when you are talking about more than one person, place, thing, or idea.
Most Spanish nouns form the plural with -s or -es.
Basic plural rules
| Singular ending | Plural | Example |
|---|---|---|
| vowel | add -s | casa → casas |
| consonant | add -es | hotel → hoteles |
**Vowels** are **a, e, i, o, u**; all other letters are **consonants**.
Examples:
- libro → libros — book → books
- casa → casas — house → houses
- cafetería → cafeterías — café → cafés
- hotel → hoteles — hotel → hotels
- animal → animales — animal → animals
- mujer → mujeres — woman → women
Words ending in -z
For nouns ending in -z, change z to c and add -es.
- luz → luces — light → lights
- vez → veces — time → times
Articles must also become plural
When the noun is plural, its article must match:
- el libro → los libros
- la casa → las casas
- un hotel → unos hoteles
- una tienda → unas tiendas
Adjectives also match
Adjectives must agree with the plural noun too.
- la casa pequeña → las casas pequeñas
- un hotel moderno → unos hoteles modernos
- el libro nuevo → los libros nuevos
Do not change only the noun:
- ✅ las casas pequeñas
- ❌ la casas pequeña
The same agreement pattern also appears with demonstratives and possessives.
Quick rule
Vowel → add -s. Consonant → add -es.
Remember that articles and adjectives usually need to become plural too.
