Present Progressive in Spanish

The present progressive describes an action that is happening right now.

It is formed with:

estar + gerund

Estoy estudiando.

I am studying.

Está comiendo.

He / She is eating.

Estamos hablando.

We are talking.

How to form the gerund

For most verbs:

  • -ar → -ando
  • -er / -ir → -iendo

Estoy trabajando.

I am working.

Está escribiendo un mensaje.

Common irregular gerunds

Some verbs change their spelling or stem:

  • leer → leyendo
  • oír → oyendo
  • ir → yendo
  • dormir → durmiendo
  • pedir → pidiendo

Examples:

Estoy leyendo.

I am reading.

Está durmiendo.

He / She is sleeping.

Estamos pidiendo comida.

We are ordering food.

When to use it

Use the present progressive mainly for an action in progress at the moment of speaking.

Ahora estoy estudiando.

I am studying now.

¿Qué estás haciendo?

What are you doing?

Los niños están jugando.

The children are playing.

Spanish uses the simple present more often than English for general or habitual actions:

Trabajo en Barcelona.

I work in Barcelona.

Estoy trabajando ahora.

I am working right now.

Pronouns with the present progressive

Object and reflexive pronouns can go in two places:

before estar

  • Lo estoy leyendo.
  • Me estoy preparando.

or attached to the gerund

  • Estoy leyéndolo.
  • Estoy preparándome.

Both positions are correct.

A written accent is usually needed when a pronoun is attached to the gerund.
