Gender and articles

Spanish nouns have grammatical gender, so it is useful to learn each home vocabulary word with its article:

  • la casa
  • el dormitorio
  • la cocina
  • el baño
  • la mesa
  • el sofá

Use un with masculine singular nouns and una with feminine singular nouns:

  • un sofá
  • un armario
  • una mesa
  • una ventana

Learning la cocina rather than just cocina helps you remember the noun’s gender.

Hay vs tener when describing your home

Two useful structures are hay and tener.

Use hay to say what exists in a place:

  • En mi habitación hay una cama y un escritorio. — There is a bed and a desk in my room.
  • Hay dos baños en el piso. — There are two bathrooms in the apartment.

Use tener to say what your home has:

  • Mi piso tiene dos habitaciones. — My apartment has two bedrooms.
  • Nuestra casa tiene un jardín. — Our house has a garden.

A useful beginner rule:

hay + thing → what there is
home + tiene + thing → what the home has

Saying where things are

Use estar when you want to say where a specific object or room is.
