Telling Time and Time Expressions
Spanish tells the time with es la for one o’clock and son las for all other hours.
Asking and telling the time
- ¿Qué hora es? — What time is it?
- Es la una. — It is one o’clock.
- Son las dos. — It is two o’clock.
- Son las siete. — It is seven o’clock.

Minutes past the hour
Use y + minutes:
- Son las tres y cinco. — It is 3:05.
- Son las cuatro y diez. — It is 4:10.
- Son las seis y veinte. — It is 6:20.
Two common expressions are:
- y cuarto — quarter past
- y media — half past
Examples:
- Son las dos y cuarto. — It is 2:15.
- Son las cinco y media. — It is 5:30.
Minutes before the next hour
Use menos + minutes with the next hour:
- Son las ocho menos veinte. — It is 7:40.
- Son las diez menos cuarto. — It is 9:45.
- Es la una menos diez. — It is 12:50.
You can also say the time directly with numbers:
- Son las siete cuarenta. — It is 7:40.
Saying when something happens
Use a before a clock time:
- Desayuno a las ocho. — I eat breakfast at eight.
- La clase empieza a las nueve y media. — The class starts at 9:30.
- Comemos a la una. — We eat at one.
Compare:
- Son las ocho. — It is eight o’clock.
- Trabajo a las ocho. — I work at eight.

Parts of the day
- por la mañana — in the morning
- por la tarde — in the afternoon / evening
- por la noche — in the evening / at night
Examples:
- Trabajo por la mañana. — I work in the morning.
- Estudio por la tarde. — I study in the afternoon.
- Salgo por la noche. — I go out at night.
With a specific time, use:
- a las ocho de la mañana — at eight in the morning
- a las tres de la tarde — at three in the afternoon
- a las diez de la noche — at ten at night
Noon and midnight
- mediodía — noon
- medianoche — midnight
Examples:
- Es mediodía. — It is noon.
- La película termina a medianoche. — The film ends at midnight.
Time expressions for routines
Use these words to put actions in order:
- primero — first
- después — afterwards
- luego — then
Primero desayuno. Después trabajo. Luego vuelvo a casa.
— First I have breakfast. Afterwards I work. Then I go home.
These expressions are useful with the present tense and reflexive verbs when talking about daily routines.
