Basic Conjunctions

Conjunctions connect words or simple ideas. Four useful A1 conjunctions are y (and), o (or), pero (but), and porque (because).

Examples

Compro pan y queso.

I buy bread and cheese.

Quiero una camisa o un jersey.

I want a shirt or a sweater.

Es bonita pero cara.

It is pretty but expensive.

Compro esta camisa porque me gusta.

I am buying this shirt because I like it.

No voy al parque porque llueve.

I am not going to the park because it is raining.

Use también and tampoco when you want to add or agree with a positive or negative idea.

Watch out

Por qué asks “why?” and is written as two words with an accent: ¿Por qué estudias español? Porque answers “because” and is one word: Porque quiero viajar. See question words and basic questions.
