Irregular Pretérito Indefinido Verbs in Spanish

Many common Spanish verbs are irregular in the pretérito indefinido. Some use an irregular stem with a special set of endings, while others, such as ser and ir, have completely irregular forms.

This page covers the most useful irregular patterns. For when to use this tense, see Pretérito Indefinido in Spanish.

Irregular preterite endings

Many irregular verbs use a new stem plus the same endings:

SubjectEnding
yo-e
tú-iste
él / ella / usted-o
nosotros / nosotras-imos
vosotros / vosotras-isteis
ellos / ellas / ustedes-ieron

Notice that the yo and él / ella / usted forms do not have written accents.

For example, tener uses the stem tuv-:

Subjecttener
yotuve
tútuviste
él / ella / ustedtuvo
nosotros / nosotrastuvimos
vosotros / vosotrastuvisteis
ellos / ellas / ustedestuvieron
  • Ayer tuve mucho trabajo. — I had a lot of work yesterday.
  • Tuvimos un problema con el coche. — We had a problem with the car.

Ser and ir

Ser and ir have exactly the same forms in the pretérito indefinido.

Subjectser / ir

Decir

Some irregular verbs have a stem ending in j.

For example:

decir → dij-

Subjectdecir
yodije
túdijiste
él / ella / usteddijo
nosotros / nosotrasdijimos

Notice dijeron, not dijieron. Verbs with an irregular j stem use -eron instead of -ieron in the third-person plural.

Other examples include:

  • traer → traj- → traje, trajeron
  • producir → produj- → produje, produjeron

Dar and ver

Dar and ver have short irregular forms.

Subjectdarver

Stem changes in -ir verbs

Some -ir verbs have a stem change only in the él / ella / usted and ellos / ellas / ustedes forms.

Common patterns are:

  • e → i: pedir → pidió, pidieron
  • e → i: sentir → sintió, sintieron
  • o → u: dormir → durmió, durmieron

Compare:

  • pedí, pediste, pidió, pedimos, pedisteis, pidieron
