Question Words and Basic Questions in Spanish

Spanish questions use both an opening and a closing question mark: ¿ ?

Unlike English, Spanish does not use do or does to form questions:

  • Trabajas aquí. — You work here.
  • ¿Trabajas aquí? — Do you work here?

How to form questions

Question words usually come near the beginning:

  • ¿Dónde vives? — Where do you live?
  • ¿Qué quieres comprar? — What do you want to buy?
  • ¿Cuándo comes? — When do you eat?
  • ¿Cómo estás? — How are you?

For yes-or-no questions, you usually do not need a question word:

  • ¿Hablas español? — Do you speak Spanish?
  • ¿Tienes hermanos? — Do you have siblings?
  • ¿Está abierto? — Is it open?

Cuánto changes to match the noun

Before a noun, cuánto changes for gender and number:

  • ¿Cuánto dinero tienes? — How much money do you have?

  • ¿Cuánta agua quieres? — How much water do you want?

  • ¿Cuántos libros hay? — How many books are there?

  • ¿Cuántas camisas hay? — How many shirts are there?

  • ¿Cuánto cuesta? — How much is it?

  • ¿Cuánto cuesta esto? — How much is this?

  • ¿Cuánto cuestan estos zapatos? — How much are these shoes?

Por qué vs porque

Use por qué to ask why:

  • ¿Por qué estudias español? — Why do you study Spanish?

Use porque to answer because:

  • Porque me gusta. — Because I like it.

Watch out

Question words normally have written accents when they are used in questions:

qué, quién, dónde, cuándo, cómo, cuánto

Questions often use the present tense and patterns such as gustar.
