Meaning / Usage

These endings are common spoken contractions of indirect quotation. They let you pass on what someone said without repeating the exact original sentence.

  • -는대 / -ㄴ대 / -대 report statements: “They say…” or “I heard…”
  • -냬 reports a question: “They ask…”
  • -래 reports a command or request: “They say to…”
  • -재 reports a suggestion: “They say we should…”

The forms shown here are casual. Add 요 for polite conversation: 간대요, 크대요, 가냬요, 기다리래요, 같이 보재요.

Past statements use -았/었대: 벌써 출발했대 means “They say they already left.” A future plan is often reported with -(으)ㄹ 거래: 내일 올 거래 means “They say they will come tomorrow.”

Be aware that -(이)래 after a noun reports a statement, while -(으)래 after a verb reports a command. The word before it tells you which meaning is intended.
